introduction to skincare: why you should take care of your skin.

So you want to enter the realm of skincare? Prepare yourself for a journey of self exploration. People often do not see the importance of taking care of their skin, the largest organ in the human body. There are many reasons however to do so. There is an abundance of research showing the effects that not taking care of the skin will have. Specifically, not having adequate solar protection. The sun is responsible for about 90% of all skin concerns. That means that no matter how many steps you indulge your skin in, no solar protection makes all the effort futile. This is why you should consider taking good care of your skin:

  1. Health
The skin is an organ, just like the heart, the lungs, the stomach, and others. It is just as important to take care of. It is similar to how eating healthy and doing exercise prevent heart disease. Wearing sunscreen everyday and maintaining proper hydration can prevent skin cancer. 1 in 5 Americans develop skin cancer by their 70s. The most common of these, Basal cell carcinoma, has at least 4 million cases in the United States each year. Taking a preventative step will lower your chances of getting it. The skin is the barrier that prevents all infections from directly entering the body. Strengthening this barrier will ensure a stronger shield and an overall healthier life.

  1. Self-Esteem
Many of people suffer from acne or other concerns and often feel bad about their skin not being as perfect as a model. Myself included. Taking care of the skin and undergoing gentle treatments targeted to solve these can create a major boost in the mental health of anyone. who Even model skin is not completely perfect, and that is totally fine. But that does not mean that there cannot be improvement in your skin. The important part of skincare is prevention and maintaining healthy skin. That will ensure that the health is shown outwards as glowy, clear skin. For me, I find skincare as a time I dedicate to myself to unwind and reflect on the day. It is how I cope with stress. Having healthy skin will help you feel better about yourself! It gives a sense of accomplishment. The effort pays off later on.

  1. It Isn’t That Hard
Due to a trend of extensive K-beauty skincare routines including 10+ steps, people think that skincare has to be that extensive. It absolutely does NOT. A proper skincare routine only includes about 4 steps, 3 of which are vital while one varies according to skin conditions. Cleansing, treatment, moisturizer, and sunscreen. Some sunscreens can replace a moisturizer in the morning for those of us who are extra lazy. Cleansing in the morning is not absolutely necessary either. Toners and essences are extra as well. I only think they are necessary if they target a certain concern or have exfoliating acids. Exfoliation should only be used a few times a week, up to 3 times in my opinion. A routine does not have to be extremely time consuming, it can take as long as five minutes. A routine also doesn’t have to be exhausting to the point of boredom. Skincare is really fun!!

  1. It doesn't have to be expensive
Many people, including my mother, believe that good quality translates into a high price point. This is absolutely not the case. There are many great products at a low price point, like The Ordinary, The Inkey List, or CeraVe. Good skincare does not have to break the bank. In fact, many affordable brands have better formulations than really expensive high end brands that include many sensitizing ingredients such as fragrance and essential oils. Korean skincare has many innovative formulations for a low price. I love korean skincare, and so should you.

Available on Deciem, Sephora, Ulta

Available at Sephora, Inkey List

Basically any drugstore

So, give it a go! It won’t be any harm, if you use the correct products. Taking care of your skin is a fun journey where you can learn more about yourself. Self care is an important part of mental health. It will pay off very well in the long run, especially when you look 30 at 50 and all your friends look like they're going on 60. Remember: Always have fun and be an educated consumer !!!
